Growing Seeds with Students while Teaching Remotely

In Vermont, we found that educators were interested in incorporating gardening activities or lessons into remote learning plans, and Farm to School Coordinators and educators were able to align with school nutrition staff's meal pick up sites to distribute seed packets to interested families along with student meals.

A flyer with simple instructions accompanies the seed packets. Students will be instructed to plant their seeds in containers inside, keep in a sunny, warm location, and water daily.  The seedlings can be transplanted (here are some helpful transplanting tips) outside in mid-May.

Here is another seed growing handout to use created by Healthy Roots Collaborative, RiseVT, and South Hero Land Trust

We hope your students and families will enjoy this activity they can do together while at home during the COVID-19 crisis.  Students will have a chance to nurture their seeds, watch them grow, learn about what plants need to survive, and more!
