FEAST = Food Education And Sustainable Thinking

The Vermont Feast Youth Summit is day of workshops designed by high school students, for high school students.

Since 2023, this annual day of workshops and conversations convenes Vermont high school students who are passionate about food systems, sustainability, and their role in addressing climate action.

To design the event, a group of student planners work alongside a small team of Vermont educators to identify a host site, design the agenda, recruit youth workshop presenters, and get the word out. Past summits included workshops on microgreens, pollinators, arepa-making, micro-dairies, advocating in the state house, wild foraging, cooking, and nutrition.

It's a chance to connect with other students who have similar interests as me. Students who care about the environment and what we're doing to it. It's really great to connect with students about that and share ideas.

Why Student-led?

There’s lots of inspiration to be had from young people! To create a more just, sustainable, flourishing future, we need to include to perspectives and voices of the next generation of food systems leaders. The FEAST Summit is designed to offer Vermont students the opportunity to learn and connect, but also the chance for them to step into leadership roles and build confidence to make change in their own communities.

I know the impact that I made has continuously been trickling down to other grades and schools. And now other students are taking the mantle and pushing it forward farther than I ever could have imagined. That's what's really beautiful about it.
